Simple Chocolate And Date Spread

As an alternative to nut based chocolate spreads this one is date based. Because of sweetness of the dates, there is no need to add sugar or any other sweetener. Dates also contain plenty of fiber, but less calories than nuts. This variation is perfect for those who watch their calorie intake or those allergic to nuts. It is also vegan and wheat and gluten free.

Easy, satisfying, vegan chocolate spread, sweetened with dates.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup / 230g of pitted dates, packed
  • 50 ml of boiled water, plus more for mixing
  • 4 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp of cold pressed coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Pour boiled water over dates and leave to cool for a few minutes. This will soften the dates.

  2. Place dates with any remaining water and the rest of ingredients into a food processor or a small blender and mix until desired consistency is reached. Add a splash or two of water if the paste is too thick.

  3. Place in a container and keep refrigerated.

  • Love this recipe! Very healthy snack but with the remaining water it came out too watery/ liquid but tasted amazing, I made it again without extra water and a smooth texture came out so basically anyone’s preference but the taste is perfect! Thank you!!

    can i use olive oil instead of coconut oil?

    not sure my kids will like the coconut if you ca taste it.

    • Hi! You can certainly try. Dates make up the bulk of this confection, so swapping oil should work. Personally I prefer more neutral oils in my desserts, and I find coconut oil to
      be more neutral than olive oil – you don’t really taste the coconut. However, there’s only 1 tbsp of oil in this recipe, so it might work. In fact you might try to omit oil altogether. OR use a spoon of peanut butter instead – it will taste slightly different, but if your kids like peanut butter, this would make this spread better, not worse. Experiment 🙂

      Because this recipe contains water and no preservatives, I wouldn’t keep it in the fridge for more than two weeks.

        i will try the oil and see what happens.

        i have solid organic coconut oil not fractionated – if i melt it and combine with ingredients will it become solid again and cause lumps in the spread?

        how does your coconut oil work?

        • Hi Harry, I have used solid coconut oil from the jar. You don’t have to melt it, because you will use hot water from soaking the dates. It will melt right away during mixing process and will not solidify in lumps.

        just wondering if i don’t use water will it keep longer in the fridge?

        also which brand of cacao powder do you use?

        • Hi Harry, I am glad to hear your son loves it.
          Yes, this spread will last longer without water, but I don’t think it’s possible to make it without.
          You need water to soak the dates. I’m not sure it’s possible to dry them completely after soaking.

          I live in Norway, so not sure the particular brand that I use would be available outside of Scandinavia.
          I use just regular baking cocoa. Sometimes I buy organic, but that’s about it.

            the dates i buy are medjool extremely soft so i did not have to soak it – it came out beautiful
            texture so now how long would it keep inn fridge?
