A weekend in Goteborg.
Goteborg is a wonderful city to visit for couples and families alike. It has a lot to offer, even though it’s pretty small comparing to other renowned world cities.
We are lucky to live just three hours drive away from Goteborg, so it’s easy to make it a destination for a spontaneous weekend get-away. Here, I would like to share some places to go to for couples.
If you like Mexican food, look no further than Puta Madre restaurant. 327 sorts of tequila, excellent food, and very quirky atmosphere. Actually, even if you don’t like Mexican food, just go for a drink there, because it’s so unique.
Puta Madre describes their restaurant as “A tribute to the Mexican brothel mother from 1918”. The decor is adorned in red drapes and vintage lingerie, and dining rooms designed as boudoirs.

Haga District is a place for lunch, dinner or ‘fika’ – which is a Swedish term for having something nice with coffee. There are many cafes and restaurants for various budget and dietary requirements. We had a brunch at vegetarian En Deli Haga. They serve a variety of vegan and vegetarian dishes to choose from in a salad bar style. Here, I’ve had hummus with bread, falafels, stuffed grape leaves and giant cous cous in harissa. The latter one was really nice with cold beer 🙂
If you visit during November or December, Haga is also the place where one of Christmas markets is located, with sales of warm mulled wine and glögg to keep you warm and a traditional cinnamon buns to keep you on your feet.
Goteborg is famous for its bars. We did not have time to visit The Steampunk Bar, but we did end up at a Hotel Pigalle’s Bar Amuse. The decor of the bar and staff’s uniforms are inspired by 1900s Paris. It is decked with rugs, plush sofas, and heavy wooden tables. This is a perfect place for a cocktail before or after dinner.
Shopping streets that go off the Nordstan shopping mall have a lot to offer, especially pre-Christmas. Goteborg is a great destination for present shopping! Head to Magasinsgatan and Linnegatan for some bargains during sale season.
We stayed at the Opera hotel, which is not far from the main station and provide parking in Nordstan shopping mall. Very clean hotel, with nice breakfast and spa facilities, and a great location!
Goteborg, I hope we will see you again!
